Avoiding Holiday Sugar
It’s the most wonderful time of the year… which involves holiday pies, gingerbread houses, chocolates, candy canes and more! It’s hard to resist these holiday indulgences. Giving up sugar during the holidays, or at any other time seems like an impossible task. At Smiles First Cornwall we have some tips to help you stay on the right track.
Did you know Americans consume almost 22 teaspoons of added sugars each day? Here are some helpful reminders to cut down that sugar intake:
- Inspect food labels for any added sugars, if it ends in “-ose” i.e. Sucralose, fructose etc. it means sugar!
- Opt for a sugar-free option when possible
- Swap sugar for spices or herbs for more flavour
If you like to enjoy sugary beverages such as soda, try to switch to water instead. If you are craving the bubbles you can enjoy seltzer water which has no sugar in it!
Although the change can be difficult, start small first. Before you know it you’ll have reduced that sugar intake and your teeth will thank you for it!
